Gungor: Ghosts Upon the Earth

Happy New Year, Fish Family! You guys will have opportunities to see some great artists perform LIVE in Southern California throughout 2012.

If you haven’t already been introduced to the distinctive sounds of Gungor, 2012 is your chance! The group will be performing on March 9, 2012 at The Observatory in Santa Ana. (TICKETS CLICK HERE)

Gungor is a “collective”, a unique group of musicians led by founder Michael Gungor (the group’s namesake) and his wife, Lisa. Gungor’s albums feature a wide array of musical mediums, such as a six-person string section, horns, banjos and a boys choir. Michael Gungor sums up the group’s heart for its listeners by saying “Music doesn’t have to fit the mold to move people’s hearts, and at the end of the day, that’s really what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to make honest music that opens people’s hearts.”

"Our Christmas wish this year is for my baby sister. I’m my mother’s eldest daughter of 5, with 7 half brothers and sisters. Our parents split when we were young, me being 8yrs old and my youngest sister being 2yrs old. Then in 2007 we lost our only parent, our mother from breast cancer. It was a struggle for us brothers and sisters but with the grace of God we survived rejoicing in His name. Out of us all, my youngest sister, was hit the most, because while we all had a companion and a shoulder to cry on my baby sister who lived in our shadows and spent her nights next to my mom was all alone. I wish for something great to happen to her, whether it be that her named is announced on the radio station we will take it because she listens to The Fish faithfully, anything to let her feel that she is loved, she was brought up being a giver, giving her time, volunteering at the parks, baby sitting everyone’s kids and we want to be able to show her how much we love her so dearly, that is our Christmas wish this year. TENTH AVENUE NORTH -- FISHFEST, BABIES, and more

The last few months have been big for Tenth Avenue North. They just finished touring around the country with Third Day on the Third Day Make Your Move Tour. Also, their song, “You Are More”, has been in the top ten on the Billboard's top Christian music charts since January.

Both Mike and Jeff added a little more joy into their lives this year. Jeff and his wife had a little boy this last January and Mike and his wife had a baby girl in February. Congratulations guys!

Compassion in Honduras

We all need a little more Compassion in our lives. Tenth Avenue North is trying to live that out. Last December they headed to Honduras to hang out with some Compassion International kids. It was a life changing trip for the guys. One of the highlights was when Jeff and Ruben both got to meet the kids they each support.

You may have already heard the sad news; David Crowder Band is breaking up later this year. DC*B has been sharing their music with their fans the last 11 years. In this past decade, each member has gotten married and many have had children. Earlier this year they were discussing what else they want to do with their lives and determined it was time to break up in order to pursue these goals. Some are hoping to do more writing, others are looking to continue with new music projects, and all of them will be spending more quality time with their families.

In the past decade, DC*B have not only blessed the lives of their fans with their music, but they have also brought great entertainment and upbeat energy to their live shows. They are a one-of-a-kind band, changing the lives of so many.

Seeing them in concert is an experience you won't want to miss AND one you don't have to miss...They will be playing at FISHFEST as one of their last visits to Southern California, get tickets here.

“I think it all started for me that year I couldn’t sleep and almost lost my mind.”

In the fall of 2001, singer/songwriter John Mark McMillan sat out on his porch for hours each night, sometimes with a buddy, sometimes with a few, but mostly with God, and the precarious rhythms of late night traffic.

“I had nowhere to go,” he explains. “I’d weathered a break up that left me questioning my sanity and I’d quit my job at the Olive Garden after a woman cussed me out over the price of cranberry juice. With no work, no relationship, and my ‘89 Ford Tempo on its last legs, I found myself emotionally and, otherwise, shipwrecked. My whole world was a guitar and everything I wished I’d said.”

“I think it was during those months that I learned how to write a song,” he continues, “because that was the year I learned to be honest with God.”

As a teenager, McMillan played his first guitar chords on the loading docks behind his father’s storefront church in Pineville, NC. He readily admits that he began playing for the same reason so many other teenage boys do - - to impress girls. Unfortunately, it was a little late in the game for the instrument to become much of a savior. But, he says it did become a friend, an outlet, a way of sorting things out.

Looking back, it makes sense that McMillan would go back to that place on the porch a year later when he found himself against the ropes, this time with another set of issues and another batch of songs.

In November of 2002, while recording in a Jacksonville, Florida studio, McMillan received a call notifying him that two of his friends had been critically injured in a car accident. Later that evening, he received another call from his father who broke the news that one of McMillan’s closest childhood friends was gone.

“I had pages of dialog with God in the days that followed, some angry, mostly confused, but also I wrote a lot of songs,” he says.

It was that time period that shaped verses like “Kiss Your Feet”, a modern vision of Mary Magdalene, and an emotional climactic folk tune called “Ashes and Flames.” The first song of that generation, much of it written the day after the accident, was the song “How He Loves.” McMillan says the song was every bit a “tribute to a friend, a cry for understanding, and the worship that resulted from it all.”

The following years were characterized by an almost confusing contrast. While he lived with an ever-present stinging sensation from the loss, he was enamored with the immense joy of his engagement to “a brilliant, angelic girl” named Sarah Williams. The couple were married in 2004 and have been confidants, band mates, and business partners ever since. In 2008, their son Jude was born to the growling vocals of Kevin Prosch singing, “Praise the Lord, Oh My Soul” over a hospital radio. More than anything, it was this contrast that shaped the ideas that would eventually become the critically acclaimed album The Medicine.

“Up to that point, much of my music, though rarely void of hope, was still born out of loss,” says McMillan. “However, The Medicine, presents portraits of resurrection.”

From “Death In His Grave,” a southern, hymn-like narrative depicting the classic resurrection of Jesus, to “Skeleton Bones,” a worship song celebrating the power of resurrection life, a story of resurrection is present throughout the whole record. Songs like “Ten Thousand” illustrate the ultimate victory of life over the grave as do “Out of the Ground” and “Carbon Ribs” in more abstract ways.

“More than anything, I think The Medicine explores the implications of resurrection in our everyday lives, even the dead places of our lives that need resurrecting,” he continues. “To his own hurt, Jesus, chose to be a part of our world. Why would we pretend that we don’t bring all our love, loss, and insecurity with us into the conversations we call ‘worship’? After all, we don’t serve a God who is unacquainted with grief. He is not surprised by or even unfamiliar with the darkness that can plague a human heart. In fact, he specializes at dealing with that sort of

thing.”

“That is what The Medicine is about and those are some of the conversations I want to help people have in worship,” he adds. “I want to write songs that give your heart language in the porch lights of your own reckoning; dangerous songs that give you permission to wear your heart on your sleeve before Jesus, unencumbered by the grave cloths of mindless tradition.”

Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 - they ROCKED the Gibson Amphitheater!

Here's a glimpse at what happened backstage:

Lara Scott and our Contest Winners Joell and Wendy, hung out backstage... chatting about life, kids, foster parenting (Joell and Wendy - who are foster moms and started a ministry at their church - truly inspiring women) and everything else you can think of! Backstage was pretty mellow as the artists and crew were busy setting up, but thankfully the tour brought along a gourmet coffee cart for their backstage! Best vanilla latte ever! After a Backstage hang out, Lara and the winners got to go to a VIP Tobymac Meet & Greet and Acoustic set. Toby answered questions, and sang some old favorites, it was so fun! That was followed by dinner backstage, the Gibson Amphitheater backstage has the coolest catering room, its set up like an old diner, and the food was so good.

We caught up with TobyMac backstage eating popcorn before his set... he was so excited to be back in L.A., and the crowd sure did show him we happy to have him back! Toby chatted with our contest winners , they talked about kids and adoption, and Toby shared that two of his kids are adopted.

Next up was Brandon Heath, he played songs off his new album "Leaving Eden" - which is, in our opinion his best album yet, he also played favorites like "Give me your eyes," "I'm not who I was," which of course had people on their feet singing along.

FINALLY TOBYMAC! Ok, there is no way to describe a TobyMac concert, its more energy and excitement than you can imagine. Race for the Cure 2010

We had 44 team members, and raised money to help find a cure for breast cancer!

1. Question from Todd Burgess:
When did he know music was his calling?
Answer: I kind of think of myself as an ‘accidental’ musician b/c it was never really my plan to play music – I have a biology degree and was on the pre-med route but had started writing songs while I was in college. God really used a certain group of friends in my life to push me in the direction of music b/c I’m not sure if I would’ve had the courage to pursue it on my own. These folks just really encouraged me to take a year after graduating before applying for Med-school (my plan) and at least see what would happen with music (God’s plan). So that year has turned into 15 years now...it’s a been a beautiful journey.

2. Question from Ian Haynes:
What can you tell us about the inspiration behind the brand new song Here Goes?
Answer: I wrote Here Goes with my longtime friend Brandon Heath based on the many conversations we’ve had over the years that have revealed that more often than either of us care to admit, we have allowed fear to control those difficult moments in our lives rather than faith. It is a song about stepping into the difficult with the determined trust that there is indeed a God who is completely in control and completely good. Hebrews 4:14-16 says that we have an advocate in Christ who understands our fear, and even our weakness, and has gone before us…but even more so calls us to go boldly before the throne of grace to find help in our time of need. Here Goes does nothing more than claim that scripture as truth and sing it out as a proclamation of the goodness of God as we stand on the edge of difficult decisions.

3. Question from Marcia Parker:
I always wanna know what singers listen to. What is on Bebo's favorite iPod playlist?
Answer: Well, it’s a pretty constantly revolving door but there are always a few folk staples like David Gray and Patty Griffin...lately though, I’ve been listening to John Mark McMillan, an independent artist from NC, Phil Wickham, and Tenth Avenue North

4. Question from Susie Sossaman:
Where is your favorite place to sing? Like weddings, parties, etc.
Answer: I definitely HATE singing at weddings...WAY too much pressure to not mess up THE day of the their lives...had to quit doing that years ago b/c it was the only place left where I really still got nervous to sing. I’d say my favorite place to sing really just depends on the day and the audience...usually the smaller more intimate shows feel more at home to me...more like a conversation than a concert.

5. Question from Jamie Lee Hunt:
What is BEBO's favorite food to eat and why?!
Answer: Biscuits. Because I’m from Georgia!

Natalie Grant recently spent some time with the FISH at a special private record release concert and event (an on-demand online video of that event is on its way!), she shared with us the idea behind her new album "Love Revolution." The new album is more than just a collection of songs, its a call to action!

Natalie Says: "Revolution is a BIG word. It can even be intimidating. Some of you are asking, “me? start a revolution?” But average, regular, every-day people have always been used throughout history to change the world. Time after time, God used the small, the un-qualified, the “nobody’s”. And He still does. He chooses to use me. And He chooses to use YOU. But this isn’t just a revolution we’re talking about. It’s a LOVE revolution. It’s about living out compassion and standing against injustice. It’s in the little things. Donate your clothes. Visit the elderly. Make a meal. Mow your neighbors lawn. Haiti still needs your help!

A Message from 95.9 The Fish's LARA SCOTT:

Haiti has faded from the headlines, but the need there is still so great. We are working with Food For The Poor today to build homes for folks who lost everything in the earthquake.

So many families have been sleeping in tents, or sleeping in the mud, for months now, but we have a chance today to move them into a safe, secure, beautiful FFP home, just in time for the rainy season and hurricane season.

You will hear stories today that will break your heart, but I pray that you will not flip to the next station or put on a CD.

I pray that God will break your heart for the children and families of Haiti, as I know His heart must be breaking for them now.

WE are the hands and feet of Christ, and we can make the gospel real for someone who is suffering right now...for that mother who spent days digging her son out of the rubble of their house after the earthquake, and then didn't have enough money to bury him.
What if that was YOUR child?
What if that was YOUR house in Yorba Linda that collapsed, and all of SoCal was devastated, and no help was coming?

We can't bring her son back, but we can come along side her and tell her: We love you, and we see your pain. We can make sure she has a safe place to sleep at night, and we can make sure she knows her prayers have been heard, and that God has sent someone to help her.

What would God have you do today? We can all do something, and together we can change the future for many, many families. Matthew West just started working on a new album, and the concept is so cool! Please take a second, and read the letter from Matthew, you might just inspire a song on his next record!

Letter from Matthew West:

It’s time to make a new record. It has been an amazing ride with the last one, Something to Say, and I’m so thankful for the people who have welcomed my songs into your lives. I’ve been thinking and praying about what God wants to say through the songs on the next record and I keep coming back to this one idea that I want to share with you. My songs have always been inspired by real life and moments that move me to write about them. Joy, pain, struggles, victories, loss, and people I meet along the way are all ingredients to the songs I write.

Something to Say was written in the hopes of encouraging you that you really do have something to say. You matter. God has created you to live a life that will tell a story of His love to the world in a unique and amazing way. I see now that these lyrics from the last record were pointing the way to where I would be heading with the next album: “Your life is the song that you sing, and the whole wide world is listening.”

The next record is going to be called The Story of your Life. Every song on this record is going to be inspired by the stories of your lives. I will be giving you a chance to write to me and submit your story. The story can be about anything. A defining moment in your life. A difficult time you’ve faced. Your own personal testimony. Or even what God means to you. It could be anything. There are no boundaries or limitations.

Several months ago I had a vision of the inside of a cabin with thousands of stories from people printed out and spread all over the tables and floors and couches and chairs. I had a vision that I would be there in the cabin, reading the stories, praying for inspiration, and writing like crazy. That vision is about to become a reality. Snow Day activities will also include a winter sports trampoline show, a hockey skill play area, a professional ice skating show, snow sledding, snow play area and kid’s arts and crafts activities.

The Fish is hosting a FREE Movie Screening of the new indie film "TO SAVE A LIFE" - this film deals with real life teenage issues, and it points to a way out of these problems through following God's path and reaching out to others.

Parents: To Save A Life has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America "due to mature thematic elements involving teen suicide, teen drinking, some drug content, disturbing images, and sexuality."

We are not recommending this movie for children. If you plan on attending with your teens, do so at your own discretion.

Pink and Pink and more Pink!

Thank you to all that came out to the Race for the Cure yesterday in Newport Beach. It was inspiring to be there with all the Survivors dressed in pink with their pink beads (a strand of beads for every year as a Breast Cancer Survivor). The Fish was busy all day in the Health expo, and Bobby Shaw and his family walked the 5K in the 9:45 race, you can see their cute family photo above.

Thanks to all that came out, we had our first SELL OUT at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine... around 15,000 people.... it was an amazing day!

10. The FISH Promotions Crew...From Set up, to working all the FISH Radio Booths, to cleaning up, this crew was unstoppable! Next time you see them at a FISH event tell them how awesome they are :)
9. BRANDON MUCHOW...He had a huge crowd at the Edge Stage, we were so proud of him! He played the same stage slot that local favorite Jeremy Camp played at our first ever FISHFEST... Jadon Lavik played that same spot a couple years later... just sayin'
8. NEEDTOBREATHE...One of the best performances of the day, we aren't the only ones to say so, they got a glowing review in the OC Register! (p.s. they are the nicest guys too!)
7. HAWK NELSON... These guys rock! One of the biggest crowds we've seen at the Edge Stage... and are super nice....That's what we love about FISHFEST!
6. Phil Wickham was amazing. Huge huge crowds at the main stage in the middle of the day, showing the local love for this San Diego native... people love this guy, and for good reason!
5. Matthew West... how is it possible that 2009 was his first FISHFEST? The crowd was loving his set on the main stage, and he was such a blast to hang out with! (here's a video of BWD having some fun "auditioning for Matthew at the FISH broadcast booth)

4. Jars of Clay ... A Fish favorite for good reason, their set was amazing, they played lots of new music, but also some old favorites. The "re-invention" of Flood was fantastic! Come back to Orange County soon guys!

3. MercyMe... The entire Fish promotions team got to watch MercyMe from backstage, and it was incredible, because we got to see the concert from the bands perspective. Watching close to 15,000 people singing along and worshiping together was truly amazing!

The Fish was hanging out at THIRD DAY and BRANDON HEATH at Club Nokia at L.A. Live on Saturday, May 2nd! It was an awesome show, the crowd was amazing, singing and yes, dancing along with all the bands! Its hard to beat seeing a show at Club Nokia, this NEW venue has one of the best sound systems around, plus no matter where your ticket is you have a great view of the stage!

The Fish had a special guest with us at the show: Dana, our "Host the Show" winner! She was awesome! Such a cool gal, we had so much fun hanging out with her backstage, and she was a total natural on-stage and did a stellar job hosting the show. Dana, got to hang out with the bands backstage before the show, the guys from Third Day gave her their new CD and signed it for her. Brandon Heath not only gave her a signed poster, he sang a song just for her backstage! How cool is that!?! And the guys from Revive hooked Dana up with a signed poster and fought with Brandon over her attention, to say the least, Dana was the star of the day!
